\nEach of the three assessment tasks will be scored according to the assessment ratings for the Junior Novice Level of language learning as designated by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). The assessment ratings for the Junior Novice Level are as follows:

\nProduces isolated words or high frequency expressions
\nHas little functional communicative ability in the target language

\nJr. Novice Mid (2)
\nUses isolated words, 2-3 word phrases, and memorized expressions
\nTries to create sentences

\nJ r. Novice High (3)
\nUses high-frequency expressions with ease

\nLevel One: Third Grade
\nUnit One: El Mundo Hispano (10 Weeks)
\nIn this unit, students will learn about the 7 continents and some Spanish speaking countries in the world. They will also learn about the landforms that are located in each country. As an assessment, each student will complete a geography book that describes and compares South Carolina with one of the Spanish speaking countries.

\nUnit Two: Los Animales de las Islas Galapagos (10 Weeks)
\nThe Islas Galapagos of Ecuador are some of the most fascinating in the world. There you can see some strange animals! In this unit the students will learn about some of these strange animals and how to describe them in Spanish. As an assessment, students will pick one of the animals studied and describe it in detail in Spanish.

\nUnit 3: Chocolate, Chocolate (10 Weeks)
\nYum! Yum! This unit is all about chocolate! Students will learn about where chocolate comes from, how it grows, how it is processed, and best of all, they will sample lots of delicious chocolate (alternatives are provided for those who do not like\/are allergic to chocolate).
